We Need More Sams In Fiction

“What about Sam? I want to know more about Sam. Frodo wouldn’t have gotten far without Sam.” 

Samwise Gamgee, gardener, friend, the true hero of The Lord Of The Rings. Without him, Frodo would never have succeeded in destroying the ring. He never would have lived long enough to get there, he might have given up or fallen apart. Sam held him together, Sam kept him going. 

Fiction is full of heroes, the ones who were chosen and the ones who chose themselves. What we don’t have enough of are Sams, the person who helps them get where they’re going, who pushes them forward, who’s there for them, who reminds them of who they are and what they’re doing in the darkest moments. 

Frodo may be the protagonist of The Lord Of The Rings, but Sam is the real hero. We need more people like Sam.
